Wigan schools and college step up security after knife incident

Several schools and a college in a Wigan community increased security measures after reports of youths armed with knives in the area. Messages were sent to parents of students at Newfold, Holgate, and St James’s RC primary schools in Orrell following an incident this morning (Wednesday, January 22).

At around 10am, shoplifters targeted the Co-op on Church Street, stealing a quantity of meat. Later, the store received reports that at least one individual in the area was seen wielding a blade.

A spokesperson for Greater Manchester Police, whose officers have been conducting a search of the area, said: “We received a call shortly after 9am today to reports of suspicious circumstances on Church Street, in Orrell, Wigan. Officers responded but no crime was identified. Enquiries are ongoing.”

A message to Holgate parents read:

“We are aware that the police are investigating an incident in the Orrell area (not school). As a precaution we have taken a decision to enhance security until the matter is resolved.”
